The Shadow in the North by Phillip Pullman is definitely worth reading. This historical fiction/mystery novel will draw you into the world of Sally Lockhart, a young woman who seems to be followed by trouble. The setting was Victorian England. Pullman describes the good along with the bad so that you feel like you’re actually there. He developes his characters as people from completely different backgrounds coming together to help each other. He shows their strengths and weaknesses clearly so that you feel like you know them better than you know yourself. The plot of the story develops slowly at first using foreshadowing to keep the reader curious then suddenly things happen so fast it’s hard to keep up. I love the way one moment it’s boring and the next there’s a lot of action. Even if you don’t usually like mysteries, I think you’ll like this book.
