Hell yeah. He knocked off Nadal and Gasquet in the same tourney. Also he jumped from 189 to 49 in a year so who knows. Gotta get past Djokovic or Federer first.
I expect him to, he has no points to defend in all 7 tennis masters series events that lead up to the US Open and he has no points to defend in the French Open. He could very easily be a top 5 player by the US Open. If he wins the Aussie Open he will be a top 10 player because Gonzo falls out of the top ten next week. Tsonga has 789 points right now and is assured of 700 if he loses the final. That alone puts him at 18 or 19 (not sure) and with no points to defend he should easily crack the top ten.
Here are the current rankings which will change as Gonze plummets
Here is a breakdown of Tsonga’s points
I think he’s at least in the Top 20 if he doesn’t win the Australian Open. However, if he does infact win, he will most likely be in the Top 10.
Tsonga’s trajectory reminds me a great deal of that of Marcos Baghdatis. Both came into the Australian Open relatively unknown and reached the final. I’m not certain when Marcos cracked the Top 10, but I know that he had by the end of 2006, the year he reached the final of the Australian Open. If Tsonga continues to play well at the big tournaments, he should crack the Top 10 by the end of 2008, though it might be a bit too much to expect him to do so by the US Open,
If he keeps doing that obnoxious thumb pointing thing, I hope he ends up lower than 100. He seems so cute and likeable, and then that freaky ego of his comes out and its absolutely disgusting.
I’m praying like crazy that Federer beats him soundly.
I think Nadal didn’t play as smart as he could of. He made some dumb decisions; like that drop shot he ended up hitting too high and slow so Tsonga was able to race up to it. Raffa should have hit it on a sharp diagonal. Didn’t even have to muscle it, just place it correctly, and he easily would have won that. He did stuff like that too many times.
Poor Nadal. He’ll be back up to speed.
Yes, definitely, because his points from last year were nothing, and he will gain a huge number of points just for making the final. He will have to play consistently though through the summer, but I think his performance at the Australian Open will give him the boost of confidence to do that.
If it was possible to maintain that level of play, then he would be the no.1 by the U.S. Open lol but then again if that was possible Roger would be in a league of his own. Well looking at the way he played and what past “surprise finalists” have done , then he will definitely be burning up the rankings. I already consider him better than Gasquet and head over heels better than Murray so yea even if due to set backs along his season, at the U.S Open he will definitely be among the top contenders. Now i know i didn’t answer your question but it’s simply because tennis is so unpredictable. But i do agree he has top 10 potential even if he is not quite there at the U.S. Open he will have a couple more tournaments to make it into the top 10 and even Shanghai… or is it London i can’t remember when they will change the venue for Master’s Cup. I wanna see more of this guy and i sure hope he can make it to the top 10 and win a couple of titles.
He will be only ranked 15th or 16th by then. He will climb into the Top 20 this week. However, having 1 magical tournament doesn’t mean you’ll automatically be a top player. He still doesn’t have the consistency to match up with best players. I predict and I guarantee he will lose in the finals of the Australian Open because their is a difference of simply playing great and being great.
Thanks for question and God Bless…
Yes. I think he will be the 8th seed at the tournament and in the overall ATP rankings.
